Still Humble?
Philippians 2:1-11
This passage gives us such a wonderful teaching about the person and work of Jesus Christ which was written primarily to deal with the division and disunity at Philippi and the three problems which caused it, namely, self ambition, pride and selfishness.
He dealt with these problems by setting forth Jesus Christ as an example to follow and imitate. If we are like Him there will never be division or disunity.
There are three truths about the Lord Jesus Christ which Paul emphasizes. Each truth deals with one of the problems mentioned earlier.
“Who, being in the very nature of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped”
This is a clear statement of the Deity of Jesus Christ. Yet Paul goes on to say that “He made Himself of no reputation and took upon Him the form of a servant”(v7). He was willing to forfeit His Position in heaven. Instead of seeking a position of preeminence, He left it. He was willing to sacrifice that position so as to take a low place
“Took upon Himself, the form of a bond servant, was made in the likeness of men”(v7)
Everything He did, and especially the great steps He took in becoming flesh, and then dying for our sins, revealed a deep humility. He is our example. We should be like Him and not be proud.
“ And became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (v8)
He died for our sins. He did not think about Himself. He thought only of our needs and our interests. He is a true example of unselfishness.
He always considered others instead of Himself-no matter what it cost.
We are invited to follow His example
