Delight yourself in the Lord
PSALMS 37:1-4
“Do not be angry because of the wrongdoers, or have envy of the workers of evil. For they will quickly be cut down like grass, and become dry like the green plants.Have faith in the Lord, and do good; be at rest in the land, and go after righteousness. So will your delight be in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.”
In the world we live today, we are constantly presented with two choices, to do evil or to do the right and good thing. Some people perpetrate evil for gain and find their pleasure out of evil works. But for Christians, we are called to do what is good and right. God is the definition of what is right and good. Its against the backdrop of evil doers and their gain that the psalmist penned down this psalm to remind those that fear God what kind of Lifestyle they should have as we reflect on our text:
As we live around we will certainly see people that are evil and through their evil they have gained or amassed wealth or live in pleasure. This, the writer says should not perturbe us or make us envious of their evil gains.
Though evil doers may seem to be at the apex of life and through evil having their pleasure, there shall be a sudden and utter end of them and their wicked ways, the more reason why we should never envy wicked people and their deeds.
This is how God’s people are to live at rest in the Land, unperturbed by evil but having faith in God the creator, we are to do good and not evil. We should further seek God’s Righteousness!
This makes the climax of the psalmist’s thoughts of the disposition of the righteous in a Land where there are evil doers. Your attention and focus should be on the Lord himself. You should find great pleasure and joy in the Lord and not in the world. Then the Lord will grant the desires of your heart. It is not the Lord’s intention to withhold the good things of life from us, but that we to put our desire in God first and he will grant us whatever we need. This entails our desires being aligned with his will then we will truly be satisfied in Lord!
Seek the Lord, delight yourself in Him!
